Syracuse Surge History

Syracuse Surge was started two and a half years ago in response to a community need: to provide opportunities for girls to improve their skills and play field hockey outside of the school season. Prior to forming Surge, there was no local opportunity for any of these kids to pursue this sport they love outside the school season without traveling. Especially in Section 3, girls had to travel to Binghamton or Rochester clubs to participate in practices or tournaments, in order to get any sort of extra training or attention from college coaches. Up until a few years ago, the USAFH Futures program did not even operate a Central New York site for athletes with potential in our area!

Field hockey in New York historically has not had a strong following compared to other states, specifically Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It also is a regional sport in popularity, with the Mid-Atlantic states having the largest amount of players nationwide playing it. Thus for girls who are interested in possibly playing field hockey in college who live outside those concentrated areas of hockey, they need to travel to tournaments where the college coaches are: the National Indoor Tournament, Regional Club Championships, Festival and Disney.

In 2012, a group of interested parents and high school coaches from several different school districts decided to offer training and started with one night of skills and drills per week at the Syracuse Indoor Sports Center. The fledgling Surge program was born. At the end of the session there were requests to look for tournament opportunities for the players to participate in. The Syracuse Surge team began ot attend local tournaments while also competing in the highest level of USA Field Hockey national events.
